Young & Restless column

Scotty Fitz (SF): How was the band originally formed? Were you guys school mates or was it something else?

Matt Adey (MA): Mere Theory formed as a band in Adelaide in 2000 with the intention of writing a unique, unrelenting and progressive style of rock music. Above all else we were mates who shared a passion for making music.

SF: Where the first two EP's pretty similar in regards to songwriting and recording or were they different experiences?

MA: We are still finding ourselves in the studio and so we were always building on ideas of how to go about things, but the process we used on these EPs were quite similar. Having written and recorded the EPs, we have found, through trial and error, a working formula that suits our style, and we run with that; bearing in mind we are still open to ideas and compromises. Disengage was definitely easier to record, because we went into the studio organised and knowing what we wanted to hear in the record.

SF: Has the songwriting process changed with the addition of new vocalist Chris Mellow?

MA: The process hasn’t changed much but we have been opening up to more ideas and we’re trying different methods. Chris is a great singer and he has a lot of good ideas which make things a whole lot more interesting for the rest of the band.

SF: Is it hard to stay dedicated and directed at times? What do you find is the best way stay on track and on task?

MA: Dedication is something you create for yourself. Don’t ever lose sight of the beauty in making music, whether it be other bands doing different things to your band, or your mother telling you to get a job. Don’t let yourself be distracted and enjoy the journey. Those who are focused and dedicated are personally rewarded in the end.

SF: The first 2 EP's and especially 'Disengage' were well taken in by the public and music lovers, now the debut album is on the cards and with a few changes in the line-up, do you think it will be difficult to re-create that success?

MA: Song writing in general is for me is the most exciting and interesting part of being in Mere Theory. Getting ideas together, shaping it and molding it, and creating a finished piece gives you a real feeling of fulfillment. I don’t think recording this album will be any harder then the others, the ideas are flowing everyone is playing well and every song is strong.

SF: You guys are onto your third record now so do you have any tips for bands going into the recording studio for the first time?

MA: Be focused, organised, and know how you want to sound. Also, be open to ideas and be prepared for a compromise.

SF: What do you think is the most important thing for a new band to pursue or aim for?

MA: You have to set realistic goals and work hard towards them. Rehearsing, recording, and touring will all fall into place if you have your goals set and you stick to them.

SF: Any final words of Mere Theory wisdom?

MA: May the force be with you.
