Recording Diary: January 2007

Days 8 -9

Well, it's safe to say that the recording of our debut album has so far been amazing. We had planned for 6 days of laying down the major drum, bass and guitar tracks, but the guys literally nailed it and finished all of these within four days!! So we're now a couple of days ahead of time, but we're not slowing down. Nigel has been busy the past couple of days, laying down some more guitars and in the next couple of days I will begin adding my vocals.

The vibe in the studio is awesome. Producer Richard Stolz is great to work with and has been pushing each of us to get sounds and takes better than we could have ever expected. I will post some more thoughts in a couple of days, when I’m well and truly in vocal recording mode.

Love Chris MT

It took a few takes to get used to the studio and the equipment we were using, but once the vibe locked in the tracks rolled out so easily. Stolz has really good ideas, a sound knowledge of rock and roll and a good ear for ideas.

We've all been bouncing off each other and getting the creative juices flowing. I’ve been lucky to use a 1972 Vintage Fender Precision Bass for most tracks and it sounds so damn sweet and smooth. Props to Richie’s Uncle Steve for the lend. We got home earlier than usual today so we went out for a beer with the Zoe and Michi (our friends that we are staying with).

There’s a neat pub just around the corner from the girl’s house called the Great Britain Hotel and they serve Coopers Pale Ale, so I was sold. Before we knew it we were involved in a game of Pub Trivia and we sucked. I thought with all our heads together we would have kicked ass but the questions were super boring and we don’t watch much television so we didn’t know many of the answers. Its really hot today and a third of the city was without power all afternoon so the pub we were at was chilling beer in eskies. Once again it felt like home. Got home and passed out. I’m tired.

Today, i wasn’t needed at the studio because we were laying guitars so I took it easy and chilled with Mellow and did some stuff on the computer. I found myself reading about crew like Ginsberg and Kerouac from the beat generation. It was way too interesting and I got stuck there for a lengthy amount of time. I’m looking forward to getting back into the studio tomorrow to finish my tracks off. It’s sounding awesome and the recording has really has exceeded my expectations, if I had any at all. Zoe taught me how to make mock meat and she cooked an awesome curry for us to indulge in. Thanks Zoe!

Peace, Adey

Day 07

Straight into the recording room and we were at it. Richie and Matt were killing it. Fattest sounds  aand good vibe today. We could’ve recorded the whole day if Mr Stolz didn’t have to focus on other things. Five songs down today. Stolz was stoked. Another good lunch by Gords. Bushfire smoke choked the cityscape. Travis popped in to tune some drums and spin some more yarns. We have been filming as well. Things are coming together.

Day 06

Headfirst into tracking, bass drums and guitar live in one room hitting it out.

It was an all day session that ran until midnight. Tired eyes, some great takes, 4 songs down. Gordon made us a great lunch. At the end of day we went to sleep on lounge room floors across the city.

Day 05

Loaded in at Sing Sing South (Crowded House, Bodyjar, Living End, Something for Kate, Behind Crimson Eyes). Spent most of the day setting up the kit with Travis Dempsey (ex-Living End). The sound came together, we had a strong vibe. A great first day, smiles all round. We started tracking 1st song.

Day 04

Day off today. We went to the Tezuka exhibition at the NVG. He’s the fellow that created Astro Boy; bloody awesome stuff. We had dinner at Richies Aunties house -   (a massive Italian feast!) Thanks Bruna and Steve.

Picked up final guitar line up, thanks to Matt (blood Duster), Grant (Bodyjar) and Richies Uncle Steve.

The line-up was:
Bass - 72 Fender Precision, Fender Precision, Fender Jazz
Guitar - Gibson SG (crescent), 79 SG, Gibson Les Paul 1980 Custom, Les Paul, Fender Telecaster, Fender Jazzmaster.

Day 03

2nd day of preproduction. Stolz is ready for us to go ahead. We had a relaxed afternoon where we were introduced to a Canadian comedy Trailer Park Boys. It

reminds us of home.

Day 02

Preproduction begins with Mr Richard Stolz, the man who came highly recommended from our buddies After The Fall and Behind Crimson Eyes. We loaded in and began our working relationship. He’s a great bloke. We set tempos for the tracks. Stolz was stoked on the arrangements and the vibe.

Day 01

The haul to Melbourne. A good drive, everyone in high spirits. The usual 9hrs for us. We arrived to a city clouded in bushfire smoke. Landed on a friends floor in Richmond for the night; snoring and mozzies.
